Security Supervisor

A security supervisor oversees guards who protect private property against theft and vandalism. Security officers also ensure the safety of people on their employer’s premises. Security personnel work in office buildings, retail stores and other public buildings. They also work in public transportation venues, such as airports and bus terminals. Depending on the size of his staff, the security supervisor might do patrol duty, or his job may be primarily administrative.

Job Description

A security supervisor monitors his staff by patrolling with them by auto or on foot. The supervisor is also responsible for monitoring the electronic surveillance equipment used on the premises. Each day the supervisor assigns areas for his officers to patrol and presents a list of potential problems his officers should be on the lookout for. If someone is caught trespassing or committing another crime, the supervisor oversees the transfer of the accused person to the custody of local law enforcement personnel. The supervisor works with staff to develop safety plans for the buildings he monitors. He leads periodic safety drills for employees and patrons in the business.

Job Specification

Working with the public is also part of security officer duties. Many jobs entail greeting people and identifying visitors, giving directions, and redirecting individuals who are present in an unauthorized area, such as backstage at a concert. Excellent communication skills are essential in order to effectively listen, understand and answer questions in a polite, friendly and professional manner. On a college campus, security officer duties can include giving presentations to students on personal safety and protecting their belongings from wannabe thieves.
