Job Description

ASSIGNMENT AND FOREMOST ACTIVIES

1. Presence and participation at work:

· must be keen observer at the MSF charter.

· Accomplish all activity accordingly with the MSF protocols and procedures.

· Respect the time schedule.

· Treat the patient with care and respect.

· Patient privacy and community culture, norms must be respected.

· Maintain respectable relationship with other team members.

· Follow to MSF Clinical Guidelines and protocols.

2. Scrub nurse

2.1 Preparation of the operation

- Dressing for theatre: theatre gown, mask, sterile cap and gloves

- take a part in a surgical hand wash before each operation

- Must help the installation of the patient

- ensuring her correct positioning on the operating table

- Dressing and putting on gloves whilst remaining sterile

- Organizing all the instruments and equipment required for the smooth running of the operation

- Counting all instruments, small compresses and abdominal compresses before starting the operation

- Organizing the sterile surgical towels and helping the surgeon to place them on the table

2.2 Must assisting the surgeon during the operation

- Antedating the surgeon’s requirements

- Offering the instruments to the surgeon correctly

- Counting the instruments, compresses and needles at the end of the procedure (with the help of the Circulating Nurse)

- Cleaning the instruments as and when they are used

- Checking that any compresses added during the operation are included in the final count

- Informing the surgeon of the final count

- Remarking that drains, tubes etc are all working correctly

- Take a part in sterile dressing at the end of the procedure

- Must ensuring that the personnel follow rules of hygiene and asepsis throughout the operation

1.3 Preparing the patient for leaving theatre

- Must observe that connections are unplugged for the transfer of the patient

- Providing assistance to the team to move the patient from the operating theatre to the recovery room

2.4 Gathering material

- Enlisting instruments into the soaking container

- Placing soiled linen, operating cloths and hats into the container provided for them

- Controlling the cleaning of theatre before the next operation

- Must have appropriate procedures to follow in the case of accidental blood exposure

3. Circulating Nurse

3.1 Receiving patients in theatre

- Informing and reassuring the patient during the operation

- Looking through the patient’s dossier

- Checking the identity of the patient and checking her consent for the operation

3.2 Preparing theatre

- Confirming the availability of waste containers around the operating table

- Arranging all instruments and equipment

- Anticipating the material the surgeon may need

- Examination the material works correctly (aspirator, electric scalpels, scialytics etc.)

- Remarking sterile material: expiry dates, undamaged wrapping and control pastels for sterilization

- Must counting the number of compresses before the operation starts

- Using a single waste container in the corner of theatre for papers and other waste

- Examination about anesthetist has his own waste container

- Watching that the team follows asepsis rules when circulating in theatre

3.3 Installation of the patient

- Installing the patient according to the type of operation

- Confirming her security throughout the operation

3.4 Assisting the scrub nurse and surgeon during the operation

- Assisting the instrument nurse

- Opening packaging following the rules of asepsis

- Anticipating the surgeon’s needs
